RIFF = Raster Image File Format

RIFF is Corel Painter's native file format.

To confuse matters, a component of Microsoft Windows multimedia is also called RIFF--Resource Interchange File Format--which is sometimes described as RIFF MIDI or WAV RIFF. It's totally unrelated to a Painter .rif image file.
