It's somehow easier to fill up a square with photos, Photoshop effects, squiggles etc. Usually there's not much purpose to them it just kinda fills up space (I've done this dozens of times, of course). It's hard to give yourself up to the grid. Feel the force, my son. But seriously, I've always wondered why there haven't been more 100% "abstract" grids, with no photographs, no characters, text , etc. There seems to be an urge to fall back on recognizable imagery.
