Guide to Real Audio & VideoAbout
This Project |
|
This web project uses sound files saved in the RealAudio format, and movie files
saved in the RealVideo format, both trademarks of Progressive Networks, Inc. Note that there is no relationship
between these trademarks or their respective corporations and this web project. |
|
Sound Files |
Within the 15 Media pages of this project are links to real-time streaming audio
files using RealAudio's "pseudo-streaming" method under HTTP. These files
are saved in 28.8 kbps format for streaming with most modem connections using either
the RealAudio
Player 3.0 application or the new RealPlayer 4.0 application. These applications are available
free from the download page of RealAudio's web site. Please note that if your computer
can also playback this project's RealVideo files, then you need only install the
RealPlayer
4.0 application since it can playback both types of media. Links for non-streaming
audio files are also provided on each of the Word pages. |
Movie Files |
Also on this project's 15 Media pages are links to non-streaming RealVideo files
that will "store-and-forward" to your RealPlayer 4.0 application. Under this method, the files are
first download to your computer's hard drive in your browser's "temp" directory.
Once downloaded your RealPlayer 4.0 application should automatically playback the
file. As with the audio files noted above, secondary links for non-streaming video
are also found on the Word pages. |
RealAudio & RealVideo |
The download
page on RealAudio's web site includes information on computer requirements, installation
and use. Follow their directions and test your player first with the sample clips
they provide. RealPlayer
4.0 will playback video and audio files on PowerPC Mac's and Pentium PC's. If
you own a Quadra Mac (with FPU) or 486/66DX PC you can still play audio files only
with the RealAudio 3.0 application. This project's RealVideo files should playback
fine on 80 MHz PowerPC Mac's (601 or better), and 75 MHz Pentium PC's (with sound
card). However, slower model computers may stutter or hang when playing the video
files. Of note, slower PowerPC's based on the 603e processor, such as some PowerBook's
and Performa models, may give poor video performance. |
File Sizes |
This project's RealVideo clips range in file size from 480 kb to 864 kb. With a 28.8kbps
connection, download times should be between 2:15 to 4:15 minutes. Most files should
take approximately 3:30 minutes. The data rate of these files ranges from 70-100
kbps, hence they are impractical for real-time streaming. |
