as EHO points out in her reply to this, you can renew -- provided no one beats you to it (which seems reasonable, otherwise its not really expiring at all, if its just waiting for you to renew or upload). way back at the dawn of (gridcosm) time, we toyed with different times. 2 hrs just kinda worked out well. 1 hr is rushing it a bit for meticulous artists, newbies, and folks who step out for a bit to eat. 3 or more hours can make the grid drag. interestingly, these values seem to change in times of grid-slowness. (believe it or not, there have been spells on gridcosm where there were only a handful of active adders, and hours and even days would pass between new *pieces*!) when it is slow like that, it doesnt seem like a big deal to have a 6 hr reservation. some talk about shortening the reservation time, then -- to me, anyway -- is an indication of how busy the grid is lately. so thats cool! its nice to have people tapping their feet waiting to go go GO! maybe we should start speedcosm, where you have like 10 minutes and 25 squares or some crazy thing. you have to sharpen your skills on gridcosm then you can go play speedcosm. like speedchess or speedscrabble, etc. caffeine required.
