"in theory", jpegs will give a better overall quality, but all the libraries we use on sito support gif, so we threw it in there. i do believe ("in theory"?) *progressive* jpegs are now supported in the "new" sito stuff. if someone wants to try, i am willing to clean up any mess it might make if it fails. no scolding! [grin] there is the possibility to support other image formats (most notably PNG). however, there has not been much call for that. personally, i wish that in some ways i could support PNG *over* GIF for "political" reasons. however, there is already so much existing GIF-dependency on sito, it would be a big pain; and the support for the equivalent of animated-GIFs in PNG isnt very strong in most browsers. so my apologies to anti-GIF sitoans.
