I'm a big fan of the Man of La Mancia. You asked me about using Nescafe. Any instant coffee should work. You just add a little water to it and try it out with a pen or brush. You can build up tones with layers over dry layers, but it also stays water soluble so you can lighten areas as well. It creates nice effects over pen and ink work and mixes well with water colour.
