Strange struggle is right. I think your professor is right...unlearning...but I'd like to beleive you can learn to do it! Not thinking but experiencing perhaps. Its an interesting discussion because I know drawing in particular is learned...you can teach it and get better by thinking about it...but at some point its not about the knowing.
