it is information automatically encoded into JPEG image by most digital cameras when the picture is taken. pretty cool, huh? (it seems also that the latest photoshop version also adds it to JPEGs, which is a little weird, but fine, i guess.) some detailed information -- Exchangeable image file format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia <en.wikipedia.org>
