Sure, why not? Or maybe Maya glyphs, Sumerian tally marks... I used to write manuals for a software package that did nothing but display numbers. A developer would set up screens with numbers displayed in many ways. Unfortunately, they tended not to be very interesting - state-change was the coolest, but that involved drawing a frame (OK, there was some tweening capability) for each number in the range. But if you did a perspective view of a translucent cube with colors of varying opacity at each point, you could get 5 dimensions on the screen at once...
